Writing project reflection

I am not sure what to put on here because I have not completed WP#4. I did get an extension because my other two group members were not going to be able to participate in it. I have a couple days to finish it in and I am very thankful that I was able to get an extension!!!! What I do know is that I have not had to do a PowerPoint presentation in some time, so it will be a good refresher. I also know that the project will make reading all of the ethics book worthwhile and will complete the class.

Shelly I thank you for giving me the extension!!!!!!

Final Grammar Diagnostic & Reflection

I didn’t really know what to write here, but I guess I can sum up what I’ve learned this semester. I wish I had learned more grammar form this class, but I’m ok with what I did learn. I didn’t learn much grammar simply because of the way the Grammar Work was set up. There should have been a better educational component instead of just quizzes.

I did learn some stuff about technical writing however. I learned how to find sources online and how to keep track of them. I also learned about blogs and the like.

I feel the best knowledge I gained from this class was from the ethics book. I was forced to think about situations that I may not have thought of otherwise. It was very interesting to learn how important technical communication was in the Challenger explosion and the Star Wars program. I also got to look at these historical events from a different perspective. I like learning about history and these perspectives are not ones that I could learn from watching the history or discovery channels.

I wish there hadn’t been as much busy work a there was but I guess repetition helps engrain things in your head.

I could only find three people to reply to… it is that time of the semester when every teacher expects you to put their class first and its finals. I my self have three more. It sounds like so much fun. Between the resources that I found that chapter nine I think that I have so good idea on how to put my paper together.

I learned form this assignment that I can use my classmates annotated bibliographies to help myself when writing. We can all use each other’s resources to do an even better job in this class, while saving time. I also learned that some of us don’t know as much as we may like to when it comes to grammar. I also learned that people must become corrupted later in life, since it seems that college students have the same views on these ethical situations, yet businessmen and politicians ignore ethics to pursue their own self interested goals.

Grammar work 11-21

In this Grammar work, I focused on nouns and pronouns. The four areas I worked on were identifying pronouns, identifying nouns, capitalizing common nouns and proper nouns, and noun agreement. I wanted to teach myself a little more about noun usage since I can sometimes be shaky on capitalization and the use of certain pronouns. Unfortunately, this grammar work did not always tell me what the correct answers were, so I did not learn as much as I wanted. I would have done some more advanced grammar work, but their weren’t any examples given on how to complete the activity properly. They should tell you what a count or non-count noun is before asking you how to identify them in a sentence. Overall I did learn that I still remember some of the basic grammar rules from grade school, but there are some areas that I do not know well and should work on.

From doing this assignment I learned that the general attitude of my classmates was that we all should assess issues of honesty and integrity immediately when they come up. It just made me wonder what kind of people don’t view the world this way. I guess after years of working in their careers, people can become corrupt morally for the sake of money or fame. Everyone also seemed to point out that an employee and his/her employer are responsible for irresponsible behavior, assuming they both knew about it. Neither can sit by and claim that they are in the right just because they didn’t have their finger on the trigger so to speak. You can’t sit back and watch as someone burns down a building or creates a holocaust. Inaction is the same as action in these cases. You must do something to prevent harm to others. This is what I learned my classmates felt in this exercise.

I am finding it harder to finish these last few homework assignments. There are several people that fell of the bandwagon and if they have not gotten back on by this point then they probably are not going to. However, I only have three more to do and I am trying to bust them out ASAP.

Writing reflection project due 11-14

I am really not happy with this project. I went though the directions and made sure that I followed them exactly. Since I am so far behind in this class I did WP#3, before I did most of the homework on it. I did that because it is worth more then the homework. The further I go on the homework the unhappier I get. This last assignment said to rethink my title. What title? This was supposed to be letter in formal block style. When was the last time you had a title for a letter? I have no idea what is going on even though I still think that I followed the directions exactly.

My response to question #3 Due 11-14

I could see instances like this happening to me in the future and in my career, although on a much lesser scale. I could see working as a manager and having to decide whether or not to use new software for example. The software might initially look like it could save our company time and money. I would have to make sure that this was the case, and only take a very calculated risk based on getting the most information possible. In a sales job, I wouldn’t want a new computer system to end up costing my employees money by taking up more of their time. I would want to go over every detail of the new program with several different people that I trusted that understood software before I even thought about changing systems. I think it is very important to realize that making hasty decisions because of promised goals can be a very bad thing, and can be very unethical. You can’t just go out on a whim because something sounds good. Just because a double chili burger sandwiched between two donuts with whip cream sounds delicious, doesn’t mean it is good for you or people will buy it. I think the point of this chapter was to teach us to think before we act, and think hard.

I feel after doing this weeks work that I have a better grasp on writing now. It really helped me to look at other classmates writing and get a sense of how everyone else was doing. I also enjoyed the information provided in the interviews. The interviewee’s answers really backed up some of the core assumptions in this class. I think, more than anything else this week, those interviews really helped the most. Reading them gave me a window into the real world and how technical writing is used on an everyday basis.

When doing this activity, I realized that certain parts of the article stuck out to other people besides myself. Everyone seemed to recognize the significance of the article using the word “inconclusive” to describe the research. People also seemed to realize the relevance of talking about how the research was done on mice and how this persuades readers. From reading my classmates blogs, I learned about the power of certain parts of this article and how it seemed to affect all of us in a similar way.

Grammar work 11-7

Grammar work 11-7

Since I did so badly on the last grammar assignment, I thought that I should basically start from the beginning and work up. I did Coordinating conjunctions. Okay I got 100% on that. I went back through my paper and looked for sentences that I could change from a simple sentence to a compound sentence.

After that I went to Identifying articles. I have no idea what this is, so I am going to take a shot in the dark. If I get them wrong may the answers will help me. Well, that shot in the dark was wrong. When it gave me the answers it did not exactly tell me why something is or is not a definite article or an indefinite article. I cannot do any thing with this on my paper. So I am going to look at something that I could us.

I did Using commas with coordinating conjunctions hoping that this will let me combine sentences with a comma instead of a “and.” So I did learn some things from this exercise. I always stick a comma wherever it sounds good. I learned that a comma is not needed when joining two nouns or noun phrases. A comma is also not needed when joining two parts of a compound predicate. I went back to my paper and did two things I looked for each comma and tried to make sure that the comma was not there because I wanted it to be. I looked to see if it was a compound predicate or joining two nouns. Then I looked for each but, nor, and for and checked to see if I needed a comma there.

Then I went to Sentence editing-capitalization and that was a piece of cake.

I think that as much as I hate grammar that the Parallelism video was the most helpful. I also thing that it comes natural to me, but it did put it more of a systematic way then I had looked at it before. I hope that this information helps me with all of my papers to come.

Grammar assignment 10-17

For this assignment I worked on identifying relative clauses. I had this assignment backwards. However, I looked at my project to see if I needed to add or remove any clauses to help it flow better.

Then I went to stringy sentence and I did that out of curiosity. I actually did really bad at this. I think that it was because I was reading it to fast. So I went back to my paper and looked for sentences that were to stringy. To do this is broke it done into paragraphs and read one paragraph at a time and I read them backwards. Reading it backward helps believe it or not, but I am not sure why.

At lease I thought that it worked because I did the second stringy sentence exercise and still did miserable.

After I failed on the second on I decided that it was time to try something else. I went to Common spelling error because my spelling is terrible. Spell check is my friend. Well, just as I expected my spelling is terrible. But not only is spell check my friend, so is the thesaurus. I use the thesaurus to make sure that I have the right spelling of the word that I am looking for. I went back to my paper and looked for any possible words that could be the wrong word.

Peer review reflection 11-7

Unfortunately, I did not have WP#3 done on time, so I did miss out on this help. I have now completed the assignment and turned it in. Before I turned it in I had two of my friends review it and one of them have been editing my papers and helping me for years. He is wonderful! He told me that since he started reviewing my papers I have gotten a lot better. In fact, he said that he could only find one typo in the whole paper. That made me very happy. I had my other friend read it and ask me questions about Furl. I asked him to do this because I could not think of any thing that readers we question. It worked. He asked me how much Furl was. I totally forgot that it was free because I use it all the time.

Reading reflection 11-7

Honestly, I don’t think that I learned any thing from the Paragraph Unity video. This video showed me how/what to do to make your paper flow better, but I already knew that. This should be something that a 6th grader reviewed. I am sure that I am not perfect at it. This may be because I am in my 6th year in college and I have had to write tones of papers and the follow it them I think that I am pretty good at. However, that is the thing with writing, something can always get better.

The parallelism video was similar, but it showed me what type of key word to look for and how to organize it. Again, I think that I have done so much writing in the past that this almost comes natural. Since this showed me how to look for key words, I hope that I can apply that to my writing in the future.

One more down and 5 more to go. I am so tired. When I was reading the annotated bibliography part of the assignment I had to go to someone log and find out what was meant by wiki. I hope they were right. I hope that when I do WP#4 I am open minded on the ethic perspective.

“Frank Statement”

This “Frank Statement” is very interesting. It’s amazing how much attention this short article pays to the idea that the tobacco companies are looking out for the common man. In a very simple , but powerful way, the article aims to calm the reader by “explaining” exactly what the current state of knowledge is on their product. The first sentence makes sure to point out that the experiments have been done on mice. This seems to project the idea that the research should not be applied to humans. Every time the article tries to refute the research on smoking, there is always mention of how the accusations are serious, but are inconclusive or incorrect. Throughout the article there is a caring attitude projected on the part of the tobacco industry. They make a concerted effort to convince the reader that everything is being done to make sure that smokers are safe. They even talk about how smoking has been linked to other diseases in the past, and eventually each claim was found to be false. In this same paragraph, there is mention of how cigarettes have benefited “mankind” for hundreds of years, making it seem like smoking is a cure for people’s problems and is part of the fabric of our very existence.
Based on what we know now, it is hard for me to imagine how persuasive this might have been 50 years ago. To me, all of this looks obviously superficial and meant to persuade, but I don’t know how people looked at tobacco back then. Every claim in the article is exactly the opposite of the truth. These companies have nothing but profit on their minds, not the health of their consumers. The committee they made couldn’t have possibly been a neutral one. There really wouldn’t have been a need for the tobacco industry to make a neutral committee, the scientists around the country should have been the neutral parties.
Finally, the document does seem well crafted in a few ways. The way it mixes technical words accompanied by simple descriptions for the lay person is well done. It seems to break down such a complicated issue into such simple terms for everyone to understand. It makes it seem understood that we can trust what they are saying. All the pledging to help is restated and regurgitated all the way through, wrapping us in a warm and comfortable blanket of lies.

Howard, Jennifer. “University Presses Set the Standard in Use of Recycled Paper”. Chronicle of Higher Education. Vol. 53, Issue 7, p13-13, 1p. Oct. 2006.

This is a resource that I found on MCC’s database. It has a lot of information on it, but most of it is not useful for this project. There is like one line that helps me in my quest, but sometimes that one line may do the job. It is also less then two months old and in a journal that has several different volumes. It doesn’t have any thing that shocks me for the data. Therefore, I think that this would qualify it to be a valid source.

Fun facts about recycling. December 4, 2006. http://www.resourcefulschools.org/facts.html.

I needed some basic and updated facts on recycling, so I went to Google and entered in paper recycling. That is when I found Fun Facts. It was meant for education and again none of the data shocked me. Best of all it was simple, to the point, and perfect.

“Paper rectcling” . December 8, 2006. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paper_recycling#United_States_of_America

This wiki, at least I thing this is a wiki, has several good facts on recycling, but it is more or less telling me the history of recycling and the way it is written it sounds like we are improving. I am not really sure that I want my readers to think this. I may not be able to use it, but it still has good facts that are simple to understand, so maybe.

Reading reflection due 10-31

I can see how chapter six in the ethics book can be applied to my job. Much of the chapter talks about the use of language to distort truth and manipulate logic. When the author talks about how the tobacco companies insist upon undeniable proof against their product before they will change their tune on tobacco and it’s effects, it reminds me of how some other companies are run, although on a smaller and less negative scale. This sophistic approach to debate makes me think of people who hear what they want to hear. If I was to criticize certain practices at work that seem less effective as a possible alternative, my boss might divert the argument by talking about the positives of the current system, when in reality a different approach may be the best way to go. People often don’t like to be wrong and don’t like it when other people come up with good ideas before they do. They must use some of the techniques described in chapter six to justify that what they are doing is right. In the same way the tobacco companies did, they could say that there is no definitive proof that another business strategy would work, so one should not be tried. It just becomes sad how closed minded and self-serving some people can be.
I can apply this chapter to WP #4 as well. I need to make sure that my views on the topic of this paper are ethical across the board. I shouldn’t be self-serving when thinking about what I would do in this hypothetical situation. It is more important to find the truth than to be right. I must consider all the information available to me and make my decisions based on what seems right. When making my presentation , I should let my audience know all the facts so they can come to their own decision on the topic.
I can use the technical communication book for my future writing projects in several ways. I learned about different ways of finding information and evaluating the validity of that information on the internet. I know to bookmark certain web pages that I may want to use again for easy access. I also want to check the credentials of both the web page and the author of the article I am reading. It can be useful for me to look through lists of abstracts of online periodicals to make it less time consuming to find information on the topic I am doing.

However, things in the class are starting to come together with what we are doing and why we are doing them. I also noticed that the further into the semester we get the shorter our homework gets and that is really helping.

Reading reflection due 10-24

In chapter two, there is a section where is says that visual communication to help you or that you can use a step by step set of directions. I know that this was aimed at step by step directions are a proposal, i.e. WP#3, I think that it could have also been helpful with WP#2. Chapter 2 was all about setting up a problem and how to go about fixing the problem. It describes to do this in a proactive way and to show that the company has something to gain from it. Someone in one (I cannot remember who said this) of the ethics responses said that people don’t care unless it effects them. I think that also means that they have something to gain or lose for a situation. I can relate to this chapter because at work when my team or myself wants to change something we have to present it to my boss in a way that he would be willing to go to his boss. Basically, he has to agree with us and then think that his boss will also agree with it. This means that the company has to have something to again from it. For example, one of the other mangers wanted us to go business casual, but know that no one else would want to. He also noticed that there has been a drop in productivity, so he proposed to have us go business casual because it would help with associates productivity. Well, it worked. :(
Chapter 3 talks about primary, secondary, and tertiary readers. I always thought that tertiary readers we people that may or may not read what you wrote. I never considered them to be someone that found the document irrelevant to their jobs.
As far as “Online Keyword Searches,” I cannot believe I just got taught how to just Google…

I think that all of us are generally on the same page and that is to try and do what’s write to the best of your abilities. Also, a lot of us think that in certain circumstances there is no limit. However, I forgot about time and time will always limit you.

Response to question 3 due 10-17

I think that Roger Boisjoly did the right thing. I would also kept at it and tried to make people understand. Some thing are as important as someone life there is no limit, just a new direction. For example, I don’t know if Mr. Boisjoly sent repeat messages to the same person, but I doubt it. I sure that he tried someone and when they continued to ignore him he tried someone else. The trying someone else is the new direction.

If I was in the situation at work where I needed people to understand that this was really important and my boss ignored me I would go to his boss. If she continued to ignore me I would go to her boss and so one. If however I got to the president of the company and he ignored me I would go to the press. No company wants bad press. Yea I get fired and they might take me to court, but before I went to the press I would make sure that I did not have any assists in my name (so what would that have to sue me for).

Brennan, John N. Evaluate Your Sales Team’s Performance. December 6, 2006. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/workessentials/HA011400521033.aspx.

I picked one on evaluating a sales team’s performance. I picked it because I have always been curious as to what a good way to do this was. I have been evaluated at all my previous jobs and have felt some were unfair. This would help me in the restaurant industry because it tends to be hard to evaluate performance since there are many more qualitative assessments needed as opposed to quantitative assessments. There were tips in this articles that talked about evaluating an employee’s competency, motivation, and opportunities, as opposed to just their numbers. I like this idea. I wish my company gave us competency tests and looked at how much opportunity we have to succeed (ie- by not comparing the numbers of a full time vs. part time employee without letting the numbers be skewed). I can use this in my job by putting such ideas in managements heads.

Stack, Laura. Prevent Employee Turnover. December 6, 2006. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/workessentials/HA011298501033.aspx.

I selected the guideline on how to prevent employee turnover. I picked this one because I have worked in jobs (and still do) where the management doesn’t seem to care about losing good employees. I wanted to see what things this article said were reasons for employers to prevent turnover. From the article, I learned that on average it takes a new employee over 13 months to become completely comfortable and competent at their job. A also learned that understaffing, lack of communication, and poor job fit are the three main reasons for an employee quitting. The article also talks about how employees quit managers, not companies because they feel underappreciated and disrespected. I can apply this knowledge at work by printing the article and dropping it in the suggestion box for them to read.

I found this source at Microsoft Office Online. The site is designed to help Microsoft Office users get the most out of their software. It also gives helpful hints on business in general. The source is respectable because it is Microsoft Office’s official website. I could use some of this information on WP #4 when working with a teammate by knowing how to appreciate and show support to my group members.

Checklist for WP#2 Due 10-17

Checklist for WP#2 Due 10-17

Using this checklist I think what I focused on is the “ Is the visual introduced, discussed, interpreted, integrated with the text, and referred to be number.” I think this because I had to make sure that the text made since and the pictures followed the text correctly. To do this I wrote the instructions while I was writing the paper. Then I went back and added the pictures. Then I showed a friend and had her go through it and see if it made since to her and that it was easy to follow. Then I went back to the assignment, checked on what requirements I was missing and added them in and made it look nice. It sounds a lot easier then it was.

Read reflection due 10-17

Read reflection due 10-17

I can use the information in chapter 5 in several ways. For example, when writing my proposal, I have to remember to keep my language consistent throughout so as not to confuse the point I am trying to make. I also have to make sure that I persuade my audience by having one point lead to the next in a logical sequence so as to make it easier for my reader to agree with my thesis. Finally, I need to have some emotional appeal to support my technical points.

I can also use information in this chapter in future writings. I always need to make sure that when writing technically, I need to try to use the most relevant information more often than tangent material. I learned that readers assume that what is written about the most is the most important. They also pay attention to strong wording that I may use. I can use strong language to show which of my points are relevant and which are less important.

Finally I can relate this chapter to my weekly work. For example, when getting my quarterly review, I may want to debate the things my manager puts on the “3 areas to improve section”. Sometimes when they think you are doing a good job, they will just tell you they will write something down there just to make sure the form is filled out. Now I realize that I should argue to have the space left blank. If over time, I am doing a good job and the same thing keeps getting put in the empty blank spots, then eventually it might look to an outsider like I am deficient in that area. I wouldn’t want something like that to hurt my chances of being promoted later on.

Shift Schedule. December 6, 2006. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/TC101920131033.aspx?CategoryID=CT101172751033.

This template I selected was for a work schedule. I picked it because it is applicable to my restaurant job, since we have to schedule around 60 people a week. I learned that the current format we are using seems to be the best option. I can’t really use this template in class or in future writings, but I can use it at work if and when I make the schedules.

Gift Certificate for Merchandise. December 6, 2006. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/TC060861891033.aspx?CategoryID=CT101043211033.

This template was for a gift certificate. I picked it since we use gift certificates and gift cards at my job. I learned that is very easy to make gift cards and to find different templates for different kinds of gift cards. Again I can’t use this in future writings, but I could use it at work for free appetizers or free dinners, especially to give to disgruntled customers or as rewards to employees.

Memo (Elegant Design). December 6, 2006. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/TC010129231033.aspx?CategoryID=CT101172591033.

This template was for a professional memo. I picked it since we use memos on our bulletin board to tell employees about important information and events. I learned that memos are very easy to make and you can just copy the template and add whatever information you want to the body of the memo. I can use this in my job in the future when telling employees about important promotions and subtractions form our menu.

I found this source on Microsoft Office Online. The website is designed to help people use their Microsoft Office programs more effectively. It gives instructions and hints, along with these useful templates. The site is a respectable source because it is Microsoft Office’s official website. This particular information wouldn’t really help me when doing my writing projects.

But it was over this weeks reading reflection

http://www.blogger.com/publish-comment.do?blogID=33193518&postID=116045679661821469&r=ok

I have been working on English homework for hours trying to catch up. At this point I don’t know what I have learned and what I haven’t.

Reading reflection 10-10

I can relate the information in chapter seven to WP #2. From this chapter, I learned that for educational purposes, I can use copyrighted material without permission as long as I’m using it for school. However, I must still cite where I obtained the material. This rule not only applies to written material, but also to pictures, graphics, and tables I might use.
I can also use this information in the future. When I am doing work for a company, then the rules will change. Before I read this chapter, I probably would have thought that I can always just cite my sources and I would be ok. Now I know that the situation dictates how and if I can use different sources. I know now that I must obtain permission from the copyright holder to use his/her material. This law even applies to using information off of e-mails and listservs. Now I know that it might be helpful to talk to a lawyer before publishing or distributing my writings when I am out of the educational setting.
The information in chapter nine on visual communication is interesting. I could definitely apply some of these principles to my work at my restaurant. Instead of displaying our employee’s productivity in chart form, it may be more useful to use graphs. This would more distinctly separate the information to the viewer’s eye. When we post information on who is selling the most smoothies or gift cards for example, we just put up a chart and everyone had to stare at it for a while just to see who is doing the best. Because of this, no one really even looks at the charts because it takes too much time when we have other job duties to attend to. If all that information was put into, say, a colored graph, then it would be immediately apparent who are the best and worse at selling these items. You could just find the highest or lowest bars and follow them to the name at the bottom. This could motivate people more because they would know that they would be more recognized if they were doing good, and they would know they would be more easily pointed out when doing bad.

Annotated Bibliography x2 10-24

I found the best thing to use for this project, Word.
If you go to:
Tools
Letters and mailing
Letter wizard

There is a section that say chose a letter format and one of the choices is full block letter. This was exactly what I needed. I have no idea how to site it…

The examples, in the books are very similar. The only difference is they had the date.

I went to Research Navigator and I randomly picked a subject and it took me to Ebsco. I also go to ASU, so I am very familiar with this web site. Also, I had already looked there… I was looking for something on recycling and every thing that I found was just to complicated for what I was looking for. That is when I found Fun Facts. It was simple, to the point, and perfect.

Fun facts about recycling. December 4, 2006. http://www.resourcefulschools.org/facts.html.

What readers need for WP#3? 10-24

My primary reader is the ASU English departments chairman and my secondary reader is my old English 102 teacher. My tertiary readers would be any one that read the proposal after my teacher and the chairman. This could be a student that would test the technology or a teacher’s assistant. Both the chairman and my teacher need to know what the technology is and how it will help students and society. TO address these issues in the paper I plan to do just that tell them what it is and how it will help.

Writing project reflection 10-24

I had multiple review it for content and editing it. I made sure that I didn’t skip any steps and I had my editors go through them as well. This was to make sure that it was functional. I don’t think that there is any thing else that I could have done better, but I guess I will know for sure when I get my grade. I am very happy that I was able to figure out how to Word’s picture editor. Without that it would have never worked. On my next project I want still want to focus on having better sentence combinations. For the course outcomes, one down and two more to go…

Ethics Q1-10-3

If I was distributing information for a company that had illegally obtained its new algorithm from another company, I would have some ethical issues to deal with. It would be hard for me to go through with it, even if my companies future and/or my job was on the line. This is stealing. Whether or not it is regular practice in the industry, I would not be able to do it. The company shouldn’t exist if it can’t come up with it’s own ideas, that’s how business works. I would feel the same way if I worked for a different company or if I was on an ethics committee. Ethics are the same no matter how you slice it. They should be universal rules that transcend the person or situation. You should be able to step back and forget about yourself and your beliefs, situation, and abilities when considering what is ethically right. If this weren’t true then we could justify any self serving or malicious activities we take part in by saying they were ethical to us at the time because it served our purpose. Ethics need to be rules that guide us, that exist before and after we are around.

Grammar Work 10-3

I went through the grammar work and no offence I cannot believe that this was actually an assignment. At bare minimum I would have expected that every one in this class had to do pre-writing in ENG 101 and 102. I thought that these two classed were a perquisite to this class. Then I decided to do a comma splice exercise, but I find myself doing this all the time. Then I thought to my self if I have a problem with comma splices in ENG 111 maybe there are still people in this class that has a problem with prewriting….
I took the assignment and got 90%. Maybe I am not that bad at it any ways.

I started looking for harder things to do and I found Combining dependent and independent clauses. This was an easy assignment, but not as easy as the previous assignment.

With the same idea I worked on Adverb clauses. I accually did not know what an adverb clauses was until I saw the assignment. Then I realized what it was and I got 100%.

I think that reviewing peoples blogs on ethic question 7, gave me a better direction with WP#4. It also may make it easier to use the philosophers in answering the ethical question.

Complex communication situations 10-3

I don’t really have any complex communication situations in either of my current jobs. However, as a nutritionist I think that the most complex communication would be writing reports to doctors telling what dietary plan I gave the patient, why I put the patient on the specific plan, how they are doing with it, if any weight has been lost and if any changes needed to be made. Since I have not done any of these, I assume that the first communication would be the original plan and why. The second would be how they are doing and the third would be what changes needed to be made to the original plan and why. The complex of this would be the patient’s specific needs. Since a doctor is going to be reading this it needs to be short, to the point, and needs to have all necessary information. However, this could end up being very long.

I read the tutorial on the keyboard. It teaches you how to use Microsoft Office programs without having to use the mouse. I picked it because I wanted to learn a faster way to use the computer. I learned some keystrokes to help me use the menu bar and how to customize my toolbar. I can apply it to future writings bye being able to save and print faster and I can use a laptop easier now because the “mouse” is relatively slow on mine, and now I can scroll through menu items much faster. Hopefully, this would allow me to use the short cuts to get the projects and homework assignments quicker.

This web site was for the Oct. 3 homework assignment. This web page has other help options that can help with MC word. This web site could be useful for further MC help and for reference.

Reading reflection 10-3

The information in chapter four of the ethics book can be helpful when doing the WP #4. It is very relevant to think about how the information is going to be used before distributing it to the public. The chapter also talks about technical writing and how the words that are used to communicate an idea can influence the reader. Relating this to the WP might influence us if we would plan not to tell the authorities about the work we are doing. Maybe instead we would, as a compromise to ourselves, use personal language to communicate our ideas and talk about the danger involved to actual people that could come if someone were to distribute the chemicals.
I could also use the information in this chapter in future writings because now I am cognicent of the ethical concerns when choosing sources for papers. I can now think about whether or not sources I have found for a research paper have been done with the best interest of the participants in mind. I think I might think twice about using an article that I may have used without question before.
I can use chapter 12 in the technical communication book in my weekly work when training new hires at work. On page 265 it talks about using the appropriate language based on who my audience is. When training someone to work at a restaurant, I talk differently to trainees based on where they have worked before. For example, someone that has never worked in a restaurant before would need me to explain to them the meaning of terms such as “expo line”, “sidework”, and “ramekins”. If I just mentioned in passing that ramekins need to be restocked on the expo line, this person would have no idea what I’m talking about. This is why the first question a trainer has is “have you worked I restaurant before?” This is so we can communicate in an effective and efficient way.

It is well known and respected web site.

Ethics in technical communication on question 7, due 9-26

I don’t think that our book took an ethical stand like one in our ethics book. I think that it tried to incorporate all of the ethics into one general guide. I think that the general guide was to show that all situations are slightly different or individualized. For example, there is a section in the book that talks about knowing your audience. It talks about being gender sensitive. I think that this was to avoid getting to specific on ethics, while still making sure that that it was talked about.

Product-oriented communication 9-26

In my current job I don’t have any thing that is product-oriented communication. I work in the fraud department don’t have product I have identity theft. I am nutrition major, so I assume that if I would have product in that field that it would be food. If you think of Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers as a type of nutritionist then you I am sure that you have seen the type of food that they put out. The communication in these products is making the food look good. It has to have an appealing look to the food, and then it has to have nutritional information on the back. The two of these is the design and the content. Then of course there has to be different types of food to give people a variety of food. Then there are the commercials and other advertisements that still have to show the same type of things, but in these they have to show that you can lose weight by using them.

Microsoft Word Assistance 9-26

The first thing that I looked at was “Six steps to developing a great resume.” I looked at this because I know that if my resume needed work that this would help me in the future. However, it wasn’t very helpful. There was only one thing that I didn’t already know and that was how to change the spacing between the bullet point and text.

Hofferber, Karen. “Six steps to developing a great resume”. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA012073641033.aspx. December, 4 2006.

The second thing I looked at was “Sort a list or table.” I looked at this because I know that sometimes the most important thing in a document is the organization. This only showed me how to sort a table that was already put together. I was hoping it would show me how to create a table at least a better table then I already can make. So I went back and looked at “Tables.” This was equally unhelpful as the “Six steps to developing a great resume.” Unfortunately, I already new how do make a table just as the directions said. Responding to classmates Question #3 9-19

Based on the two people’s blogs and the web sites that they analyzed, I think that Wendy’s web site was the best at using pathos and ethos. She used the Humane Society’s web page. This page is very good at using cute, cuddly, little animals to use ethos and pathos. Animals are just cuter the most people are…

Question #3 Ethics Due 9-19

One website I analyzed was NFL.com. This website uses many different rhetorical appeals to draw the audience in. For example, in the news area of the site, there are pictures of players with sullen or downtrodden looks on their faces. This alerts the reader that something bad has happened that might be worth reading about. In other parts of the website, like the area on rookies, there are pictures of one player making what looks to be a spectacular play. When you are initially sifting through the page for what to read, this grabs your attention to what could have been a breakout game that you might want to read about. These are examples of appealing to pathos. Another technique the website uses is highlighting individual sentences in paragraphs to grab your attention to the thesis of the article, such as “…Bill Cowher says he not interesting in the job at NC State…”. When a reader is skimming the page, this grabs your attention.
There are also appeals to ethos. The website looks very official because of how organized it appears. There are clear links to all major areas of interest, such as scores, schedules, highlights, and breaking news. All the pages are aligned well against a white background, but with a few colors to draw interest. Many of the pages appear like a newspaper, to give the articles an official look. There are pictures of the authors in suits next to their articles sometimes as well.

Another website I looked at was PETA.com. It is the website for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. This website tries hard to appeal to pathos. Many of the pictures on this site are of cows roaming in a wide field under a beautiful blue sky or of two pigs cuddling and appearing to be smiling. The site also tends to use calming colors as backgrounds and borders such as teal, aqua, or light orange. The site also appeals to pathos in what is written. The authors try to appeal to our sense of responsibility and decency when talking about how wee should treat animals.
The website also tries to appeal to ethos. They arrange the site in a way that makes it look credible. This way skeptics visiting the site that think of PETA as an extreme left wing group of crazies might think of them as logical thinkers instead when browsing. Also, their arguments are well designed and they make references to philosophers and broad theories that are well accepted and then show how their ideas are a natural progression of these ideas. They go to good length to appear credible, intelligent, and capable.

Writing Project Reflection WP#1

If I had more time on this project I would have spent more time on the cover letter. Still disagree that I need one, but what ever. I would have went to my old boss and got his opinion on what type of stuff should be in a cover letter and what should not. Then I would read his (I know that he has one). I found a lot of information on the internet, but most was to general and sounded like fluff.
On the next writing project I want it to look good and sound good. I do not want any grammar errors or spelling errors.
I am glad that I now have an updated resume, especially since I know that I am going to be in that job for a bit longer. If I would change any thing, I would find someone edit it without complaining.
However, I am even happier that it is done. I really hate writing! It is a lot of work and there is always something that could be better. Sometimes when it is done, I am so exhausted that it did not seem worth it. Like is already said no matter how good it is, it could always be better. I am glad that it is done.

After reading peoples blogs, I am glad that they agree with me or feels the same way I do. However, since I think this I don’t think that this helped m with this week’s assignment. It seams like we are all over stressed and over worked.

Grammar Work 9-19

For the grammar work I did Sentence Grammar Clauses and Phrases because did not know the difference between clauses and phrases. However, I don’t think that this section helped me on the current writing project. I was hoping that this exercise would help me with phrasing in my project, but unfortunately I only learned what the difference between a phrase and a clause was. Then I worked on basic grammar under sentence editing-verbs adverbs and adjectives because I know that my grammar needs work. It needs a lot of work. This exercise was partially difficult for me and yet it was very easy. I found it difficult because I found my self reading the sentences quickly and automatically fixing the error, but then I did not see the error. This felt like writing my own paper. When I edit my papers I have to read them very slowly because I know what it is suppose to say. So I did another sentence editing exercise. This one was the pronouns exercise. After I got the results of this exercise, there are still some of the questions that I do not understand. For example, “I don't appreciate you talking about me behind my back.” The answer was I don't appreciate your talking about me behind my back. I still do not see the problem with the original sentence. However, some I did understand the answer after I read it again. With the same idea in mind I worked on Sentence grammar and sentence fragments. These two exercises were easier then the first two because the sentences just didn’t sound correct.
For this assignment I was suppose to rewrite two paragraphs, but I did something ease instead. I read my entire assignment to my roommate. I read it to my roommate because she was home and because when I read it to myself I read it to fast and don’t’ see the mistake. Since I have a problem of know what it is suppose to say and not what it actually says I didn’t think that rewriting it would do me any good. However, making myself read it out loud made me read what I wrote carefully and slowly. This pointed out my mistakes. I think that this works better then having someone else edit my paper because then you learn from your mistakes. Also, people may edit your paper, but they might also read it quickly. Therefore, I think that I am going to keep doing this.

Checklist for Page Layout and Document Design 9-19

For my job application packet after I got all of the necessary information in the resume I mainly focused on the page format. This is because this is what I have the most trouble on. I think that the page format is the most difficult thing because even though it makes since to me it make since to someone else.
Even more specifically, I focused on the “heading visually consistent” this was difficult because I have had multiple jobs within the same company. It needed to show the different jobs that I had, while being very clear that it was with the same company. Then that had to be able to extend to the jobs that I had before that. This took a lot of revision to make the heading consistent, parallel, and clearly announced what was to come. After all if something doesn’t’ look appealing then it would probable be discarded and no one wants their resume to be quickly discarded.

Annotated Bibliography 9-19

Parker, Yana. “Sample Chronological Resume 1”. Job Star Central. November, 7 2006.
There were some strengths to this resume that I noticed. First of all, there were many good verbs used that described the person’s skills and they were usually the first word after the bullet. Another strength is that all the bullets were aligned on the page along with the section titles. A third strength was that the different headings had their own font, and the font was consistent throughout the entire document. Some weaknesses were also apparent. The spacing between the sections wasn’t uniform from section to section. Also, the address information at the top was not all on the same line; part of it was staggered. Lastly, a few of her previous jobs had no descriptions.

Asher, Donald. “Sample Cover Letter 1”. Job Star Central. November, 29 2006.
<>
This cover letter had some strengths and weaknesses. Because it was used as an example cover letter, it was hard to find any weaknesses. The only problem I could see was a grammatical error here and there. It did have some strengths though. It was brief and to the point without wasting words. It was polite, yet strong in that it showed serious interest in getting the position. Also, at the end it made sure the company knew that he would be making a call within the week to follow up.

I found this source on the internet. The site is called Jobstar and is designed to help people get jobs by helping them build resumes, find suitable careers, and recognize their qualifications. The source is respectable because it is sponsored by the Wall St. Journal. This helps with my research question because the site intends to help people improve how their resumes look both visually and verbally along with how to approach the employer

From analyzing these documents I learned a little bit that can help me. I learned some ways to format resumes correctly and some ways not to. I also learned how a cover letter should look and what a good length for one would be. I can easily apply these formatting techniques when writing my own resume and cover letter.

Reading Reflections 9-19

I liked reading in Chapter 2 of the ethics book about G.W.F. Hegel and how he felt that values are not self evident and that instead they are defined by society, especially those who are in power (25). This makes sense and I’m sure anyone can think of instances in their life, especially at work, where someone in power has chastised them for having “bad ethics”, when that person felt that they were in the right. I had such a situation happen at work where a manager scolded me for not treating a manager in same way that I treat customers (mainly excessive sucking up). He claimed that the company’s values were such that I should go out of my way to do anything that anyone asked of me. This makes sense when dealing with customers because they are paying for good treatment, but it is not as clear when talking about inter-employee communication. When both people are on essentially equal footing, they should act more as roommates instead of master and servant. This relates back to Hegel because it seems that the people in power at my company are redefining some values so as to emphasize their position of power to the employees.
I can relate some of the ideas I Chapter 6 in the Technical Communication (TC) book to some of the course major projects I this class. On page 100 it talks about reasonable criteria and having certain obligations and ideals that we should realize before writing. It is interesting to see what someone will do while trying to keep to these ideals and also cope with external pressures from coworkers and bosses such as “be a team player” and “do whatever it takes to get the job done”. These sorts of complications could come up when trying to write a proposal because I might want to be ethical, but also want to accomplish the goal of persuading my audience. Would it be ok to bend or redefine my ideals for just a little bit I order to be more successful?
When reading Chapter 8 in the TC book, I was able to learn some useful techniques for page layout and design. There are obviously countless uses for this information in our lives. Whether I am making a power point presentation, designing a web page, or writing my resume, I can apply the ideas in this chapter. It makes sense to make sure the layout of the page is such that the reader can gather the general “roadmap” before actually reading the page. Breaking the page into segments lets the reader know when there is a transition between topics or ideas. I can also see that alignment and other details give your audience an impression of how careful and professional you are.
