The Writing Process due September 12, 2006

I went over “Writing Processes from University of Victoria,” “Research and Writing Step by Step,” and “The Writing Process” I chose these because I seam to be writing a research paper every time I turn around. I don’t usually have to write anything for work, usually just for school. All of the steps are similar, but the simplest in from University of Victoria. It cuts in into seven steps before it gets to the final paper. I usually follow these steps, but I usually do the thesis last. I know that it sounds strange, but sometimes I plan on writing about x, y, and z and end up needed to write about x, y, z, and a. This usually happens because I find that y doesn’t make since without a. For example, I wrote a short essay about diabetes and was going to write about the different kinds of diabetes and the treatments for it. However, as I did my research I decided that it didn’t make since to write about diabetes without discussing how to prevent diabetes. Most people would just include this in the revision process, but this way it reminds me to take an extra careful look at the thesis. In general, I follow the steps which include choosing a topic, brainstorming, outlining, research, draft, revision, thesis, and final paper.
The most important step is to choose a topic because the topic can make or break your paper. It needs to be a topic that you are interested in and be specific enough that you do not find your self writing a novel for a short research paper. The opposite is also true.
However, these steps are just guidelines. Do what is best for your writing style. If you write you papers best by doing the research and then doing an outline, kind of to see what is out there, then that is fine too.

What is the link for that site? It really sounds like a good resource.

I fully agree with you about writing your thesis statement last. When I write mine first, I always have to go back and change it. In addition, I sometimes change the focus of my paper while working on it, so that requires a different thesis statement. I also agree that the thesis statement is very important for the paper, so it must get extra attention.

I write mine up first, and try to stay within it, unless I realize that I want to talk about something else. Mainly I use it as a handlebar.

Hi Shannon, I liked how you gave an example of why you write your thesis last - "A wouldn't make sense without Y". It's simple & true. I, too, have learned that writing my thesis last saves me time because of all the new discoveries that go along with doing the research.
